This will decrease costs of large venues, food, travel and lodging. 16:12:22 From Cesar D'Agord : Keep the new contacts made, new opportunities to connect with new people because of the covid (although via zoom)! 16:12:49 From Sara Doutre : Love the new efficiencies people are finding through virtual PD and meetings. 16:13:01 From Becky Unker : I also need to differentiate the weekend from the weekdays...they seem to look the same right now! 16:18:24 From Jim Moriarty : Lots of speculation here about Sp Ed staff retiring and/or resigning . . . 16:19:12 From Sara Doutre : Interesting Jim — due to the difficulty providing services through this time or other reasons? 16:19:38 From Jim Moriarty : The former 16:20:15 From Rorie Fitzpatrick : There are big concerns about being able to recruit new folks too, to take the place of retirements and other exits… 16:20:26 From Sara Doutre : Thank you for sharing. Supporting staff is as important as we move through this as supporting students. 16:20:48 From John Palladino : I am floored at watching special education student teachers complete their field practicums in virtual worlds. They are the generation that knows how to use technology to reach all students. It's been a fun journey watching them strive. 16:20:55 From Sara Doutre : I talked to some recent graduates last week and can’t imagine first year teachers starting out in this environment. 16:21:09 From Jessica Hammond : Will we be able to get a copy of the ppt/presentation? 16:21:45 From Rorie Fitzpatrick : Yes! We will post the slides to ncsi.wested.org + the recording. Goal is tmrw! 16:21:58 From Jessica Hammond : Thank you Rorie! 16:24:51 From Sara Doutre to Tanner Petry(Privately) : Thanks, good catch! 16:26:05 From John Palladino : Thanks for the shout out! :) 16:30:13 From Becky Unker : We also need to remember that Special Ed students are first and foremost general ed students. 16:31:43 From Jason Willis : During the remainder of our time togheter, if you are on Twitter, please feel free to tweet @TheNCSI @RorieF @SaraDoutre @JWillisSF about the presentation today. 16:32:33 From Jason Willis : @Becky: totally agreed. This structure really helps school districts to think about how best to structure resources and supports for students. 16:35:52 From Natalie Jones : Re: child find/initial evaluations how do we conduct comprehensive evaluations with no face to face evaluations 16:37:42 From Becky Unker : We have a difficult time in Utah with assessment as parents have the option of "opting out" their students. Our SWD are opted out at a higher rate than the general ed students. 16:38:46 From Beckie Davis : This content is so relevant and much needed! 16:40:20 From Rorie Fitzpatrick : Thank you, Beckie! 16:43:08 From Nancy Holsapple : I have had conversations with school psychologist in Indiana and they are ethically concerned about conducting virtual assessements as they have not been trained in digital assessments nor do they have the digital on-line assessments. 16:44:25 From Sara Doutre : Thank you, Nancy — we have to be very cautious not to compromise assessments because that could quickly result in inappropriate identification. 16:45:27 From Sara Doutre : Becky, great comment on parents opting out — do you find that for ongoing assessments as well as summative statewide assessments? 16:46:23 From Jason Willis : Thanks Nancy for your comment. And this is something that psychologists - both in school and in other clinical settings - are struggling with. Perhaps this is a resource priority for school districts as schools are laying plans for preparing to bring students back to school. 16:46:44 From Beckie Davis : NASP has some good resources/guidance on this 16:46:49 From Becky Unker : @Sara-mostly the summative statewide assessments. B 16:46:51 From Tanner Petry to Sara Doutre(Privately) : I'm pasting for me to use later. https://meadowscenter.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7VPUL9kvFInyPPv 16:47:41 From Lesa Paddack : Additionally, helping school corps and parents navigate the difficulty of communication during this time is a huge issue. Often parents of students most at risk are some of the parents that struggle the most with understanding the "process" the school corp is using to share information and service provisions. 16:49:01 From Jason Willis : We would agree Lesa. This crisis has exposed some of these gaps in school-parent relationships this makes that navigation harder. Have you seen examples of where schools or school districts are doing a good job of building that capacity? 16:49:57 From Sara Doutre : @Becky — it would be so interesting to dig into that — are we as teachers and the system communicating that we don’t expect students with disabilities to be prepared for/do well on them? 16:50:59 From Sara Doutre : We were encouraged by the number of states on last weeks webinar who reported working together with their OSEP-funded parent training and information centers (PTIs) to develop joint guidance for families. 16:53:11 From Lesa Paddack : Yes, I have seen many good examples in Indiana where communication from school corp to parents are clear and robust. Parents know who to contact, that their rights are still intact and what is happening in their child's education. This parents are aware of what the district is expecting from the school staff and have clarity in what to expect. It is clear when there is more confusion from parents and many have not accessed what they could have accessed due to lack of understanding. 16:53:26 From Becky Unker : @Sara-we have been working hard on Having high Expectations and Beliefs that our SWD can succeed as their peers have. The message has currently been coming through the Mathematics arena ….we have made progress ...but still have a lot of work to do! 16:54:47 From Natalie Jones : We are hearing feedback that everyone from parents/students to teachers are reaching their breaking points...so I am having a hard time seeing that we have stabilized 16:55:45 From Tanner Petry : Evaluation Link: https://meadowscenter.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7VPUL9kvFInyPPv 16:58:05 From Jim Moriarty : Amen - sounds like parents, teachers, and students are! 16:58:46 From Becky Unker : I feel like parents are exhausted because this was a "forced" online instruction so nobody really had time to prepare for it. 16:59:13 From Natalie Jones : Agree! I just hope that as people in this field that we can push back against the idea that everything is ok---it feels that there is a real disconnect 16:59:14 From Lesa Paddack : Time allowed to move from "busy work" to "more new learning" opportunities is going to be needed 16:59:32 From Michele Walden-Doppke : For parents of students with extensive significant disabilities, they don’t want to step back, they are looking for answers now 16:59:50 From Dean Zajic - Kansas : I totally agree with the burned out sentiment (last day of school for my kiddos) but for those of us at SEA and LEAs we probably need to be thinking about the how can help ease that sense of burden of teachers, kids, and families into the Fall and winter. 17:00:06 From Becky Unker : We are ALL learning how to move forward! 17:00:59 From Natalie Jones : Thank you so much for addressing my comment! 17:01:00 From Dean Zajic - Kansas : Sara, I think that last comment about partnering up with things like childcare is the sort of new frontier we need to look at to support families going forard 17:01:11 From Sara Doutre : @Michele - very good point. Those may be the students we need to triage services for now. 17:01:14 From Teri Williams Valentine : Thank you everyone. Be well. 17:01:15 From Dean Zajic - Kansas : Thanks everyone! 17:01:16 From Nancy Holsapple : Thank You! 17:01:19 From Jana Rosborough : Thank you all!! 17:01:21 From Cathy Boshamer : thanks so much! 17:01:21 From Sara Doutre : Thank you everyone for your participation!! 17:01:22 From Lesa Paddack : Thank you !!! 17:01:22 From Dave Phillips : Thank you! 17:01:24 From Rebecca Latham : thank you 17:01:24 From Becky Unker : Thank you! 17:01:31 From Amber Stohr : Thank you! 17:01:35 From Drew Saranillio : Thank you! 17:01:35 From Marilyn Mitchell : Thank you 17:01:56 From Colleen Reutebuch : Great webinar:)
